Parintins - Oh Boi!

"Parintins is a municipality in the far east of the Amazonas state, Brazil. It is part of a microregion also named Parintins. The population for the entire municipality was 109,150 (2005) and its area is 5,952 km².[1] The city is located on Tupinambarana island in the Amazon River. Parintins is known for a popular folklore festival held there each June called Boi-Bumbá."

Pronounced - Parintins is a tiny little town on an island.  In Summer in the stadium they have the Boi Bumba folklore performance of song, 'dance' and colorful costumes.  (Check out the link above.)  We saw it, 450 passengers at a time, in a small, hot, crowded convention center.  The chairs were all on one level so that from my 6th row seat I did not see much more than bouncing heads and feathers!  The 'floats' were very '50's technology fake jungle animals.  The bull involved in the story of the mythology was one man in a large papier mache bull that dance around. He bobbed his head up and down making the rest of him go in the opposite direction. During part of his performance he placed cd's of the show in his mouth to give to a few people in the front row.  At the end they danced with people from the front row.

It was not bad, just not good.  I am sure it is terrific in a stadium with a roaring crowd who has any idea of what was going on.  We were the second show so tendered ashore about 12:30 for a 2:00 show.  We briefly browsed the few craft stands at the front of the center.  We were served a small Brazilian cocktail which was surely not supposed to have been warm.

Afterward, instead of heading right back to the ship, Elva and I walked sort of around the block.  We had less than an hour and one definitely does not want to miss the last tender, on which we actually returned!

The few people we met seemed friendly and very nice.  There were Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts that assisted with directions and cautions.  Anywhere there was a doorstep, or uneven pavement one would be stationed to say Be Careful!  We made a donation into the box one girl was holding as we re-boarded the tender.

While we were ashore Drew showed the movie 78?52 on the big screen.  I had suggested it but he had it run while half the ship passengers were not on the boat.  A lot of the morning show people remained ashore.  And all of the afternoon folks were not aboard.

The evening performance by the resident string trio was putting us to sleep so we went back to the cabin.  The trio plays very well and the show was called Night at the Movies.  Running behind them on the stage were clips of the movies whose themes were being played.  But pretty much all downers and not lively at all - Dr. Zhivago, The Godfather etc.

My pictures of Parintins.

The ONLY flower we saw on the island and only one was on this shrub!

See the cat?  Only animal we saw!

Passed through the 'parked' ship to reach a floating dock from the Tender.
It would have been a ladder otherwise!

After dinner entertainment.
